Progress has been made.
Today I met with representatives from Martin County Parks and Recreation, Martin County Sheriff’s Dept., the Florida Trekkers and an equestrian group. The county is ready to go ahead with the trail patrol full speed.
Points: (1) The Sheriff’s Dept. will be the ultimate first responder. (2) The trail patrol will be backup or secondary responders. (3) The trail patrollers should carry their “rescue gear” during normal rides, hikes, etc. (4) Patrollers could possibility be called out at any time to assist in a search and rescue operation.
The IMBA portion of the training is to be 9:00 AM, Saturday, December 9, 2006 at the Halpatiokee Screened Pavilion. It will last up to seven (7) hours and lunch will be provided.
Martin County has agreed to cover the cost of all training and emergency medical gear. Costs that have not yet been discussed are the IMBA MBP membership fee and additional bike equipment such as lights.
Initially there will be openings for six (6) patrollers from Scrub and six (6) patrollers from Airborne.
Please post any questions in this thread and I will try to find an answer.
Post here if you are interested in being part of the bike patrol and show up at Halpat at 9:00 AM, Saturday, December 9, 2006.

Questions: Is there an age requirement? One must put in fifty hours a mouth in? Probably not agood idea for a full time student right? Can we be trained anyways? When you say Initially there will be openings for six (6) patrollers from Scrub, doess this mean more positions opening may be possible?
Thanks

1. There is no age requirment.
2. The primary function of this patrol is to be search & rescue when called in by the sheriff's dept. and to be on patrol during your normal rides, so no, 50 hours are not required.
3. I don't see any difference between a full time student and working full time. The main thing is to be able to go help with an emergency.
4. The training is being paid for by Martin County so I don't expect them to pay for training people that don't intend to participate.
4. Possibly more than 6 at a later date but I don't think soon.
I think it would be a great experence for a young man but you would need to understand that you could possibly miss a small amount of school and your parents would need to be fully aware of what the patrol is about.

When I miss school would it be due to an emergency situation?

Yes, that's the only time missing school would be required.

What would be the expected response time for that? (In regards to getting on the scene) Also, before I completely commit I would like to see how many others are interested. Thanks for answering my consistent stream of obvious questions. Thanks Much Chris

I have discussed it with my Parents and they are all for it and are fully supportive. The last step before the final commitment is I need to talk to my Principle and arrange a pass that will allow me to leave campus if indeed it is called upon. I am sure that she will support me and I will be issued one. I am looking forward to doing the bike patrol. I am very interested in high trauma medicine and I am a loyal staff member and volunteer at the JMC ER. I am a boy scout and have a great deal of Knowledge in basic first wilderness first aid which I have acquired through scouting. If all goes well I will be giving you my “official commitment post”
Thank you, Chris

SPL stands fo senior patrol leader. I am the head leader in the troop besides the Scout master. It is cool but it is very stressful.

Hey Will, This is actually Endo from Ft. P. logged into John's site. I think this young man should definitely be #2 on the bike patrol! What great enthusiasm! It would be most unfortunate if he has to miss a bit of school, not only from the perspective of the rescuee, but also because most kids really hate to miss class.... I kinda' think he'd be willing to make the sacrafice..... He's got my vote...(if in fact I get a vote.) Endo
